The grey heron is tall (90-100cm), with a sober coloured plumage of grey, white and black. It has a long neck and long orange legs to allow it to wade in water. It is a most striking bird, often seen standing motionless at a water's edge. Having found a suitable location it will stand and wait patiently for the right moment to stab passing prey with its perfectly evovled yellow-orange dagger-like bill.
