The great-northern diver, or common loon as it is know in North America, is perhaps symbolic of the vast wildness of northern latitudes. It's a specalised and strong under-water swimmer, catching fish with its thick dagger-like bill. The narrow ellipictal shape legs and webbed-feet, set far back on their body, ideal for powerful diving and swimming, but gives a clumsy, ungainly walk on land. Its distinctive, haunting, wailing calls are the epitomy of wildness.
