During periods of wet weather the effects of rain falling on the ground brings worms to the surface and can provide an easy meal for birds such as this whimbrel, a smaller cousin of the curlew. Although one of the most wide-ranging of all shorebirds, in the UK this species has a restricted breeding range.  In summer it can be seen on Orkney and Shetland.
