It is said that when Thorgeir Ljosvetningagodi, a northern chief, returned home on his journey from the annual gathering at the Althing, where the 'Lawmaker' decreed the country would renounce Pagan ways and convert to Christanity, he threw his heathen idols into these falls, and thereafter they became known as 'Godafoss', or 'Falls of the God'.
