Bright, deep-yellow eyes are the defining feature of the common goldeneye, however, its name is not necessarily derived from the colour of its eyes. The ancient Greeks called it 'boukephalos', meaning bullheaded referring the distinctive shape of its head, hence its latin name Bucephala clangula. The male common goldeneye is an  aggressive and territorial bird with an elabrate courtship display.
